Six floors above Lexington Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side lies a vibrant, European-inspired apartment interior fit for a growing family. The 2,100 square-foot residence houses three ample bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, as well as a kitchen, living room, dining area, and powder room. Tucked behind the stately limestone facade of a recently-completed Robert Stern building and located within easy walking distance of Central Park, the apartment’s interior design pays homage to the neighborhood’s history with Classical moldings and details, enlivened with an interplay of bold colors and textures.
Having designed the interior of the homeowner’s residence in Park City, Utah, the team translated their approach from the natural scenery of the West to the human landscape of uptown Manhattan. Clean lines and honest, high-quality materials carry CLB’s ethos through the furnishings, lighting, and soft surfaces of the space, while imbuing it with a distinctly urban aesthetic. Designing through a cross-cultural lens, the team worked to complement the building’s Classical style while referencing the vivid geometries of Brazilian modernism and the chic, easy elegance of Parisian design.
The team’s holistic design approach highlights the smallest details, bringing them to the forefront of the homeowner’s experience in elevated finishes and jewel tones. The interior’s furnishings are a carefully curated mix of one-of-a-kind vintage finds and custom-crafted pieces by emerging designers from around the globe. A circular, white marble dining table bound with supple leather, crafted by Portugal-based Dovain Studio, breathes new life into a traditional material by distilling it to its most elemental form. Brazilian-designed, Costela chairs by Tacchini and a custom deep blue Roche Bobois sofa energize and soften the interior space. A hand-selected collection of vintage statement lighting provides surprising and delightful touches of light, form, and texture. The walls of the space are home to a rich array of artwork, from a Damien Hirst piece, to vintage Italian travel posters and a number of limited-edition Nick Brandt prints. Bridging the old and new, local and global, the refreshed urban interior carves out an oasis that suits the family’s active lifestyle.
