Bio

Sam is deeply invested in the components that make up the big picture in architecture, from technical details to ephemeral, experiential conditions of place. Spending his childhood on construction sites in and around Jackson Hole with his family’s contracting company, Sam’s interests quickly developed from scrap-heap assemblages to full-scale architecture. Now 16 years into practice, Sam’s acutely-trained eye for detail and intuitive knowledge of building practice has made him a vital resource for the CLB team.

Originally pursuing engineering, Sam’s ceaseless creativity drove his transition to design, and he graduated with a five-year Masters of Architecture from Montana State University in 2007. Post-graduation, Sam honed his problem solving skills working in design-build, before moving to Jackson and joining CLB in 2009. In 2017, Sam moved to Bozeman to manage the firm’s Montana studio, and was promoted to Principal in 2021. In addition to his design leadership at the firm, Sam’s collaborative spirit and solutions-oriented approach has equipped his direction of office operations, helping ensure efficiency and quality control. Thriving under constraints, Sam is adept at connecting with clients and enjoys the “journey of finding” that arises from working with specific people and a specific place.

Sam has previously served on the Jackson Hole Public Art Task Force, and is currently on the board of the Gallatin Art Crossing, curating and overseeing artist installations for the sculpture garden. He is also a part of the MSU advisory council, helping with fundraising and mentorship efforts. Frequently found outdoors, Sam enjoys hiking, skiing, and camping, as well as assembling structures out of driftwood with his young daughter.
